AZTEC — A water line near the city's water plant broke at around 3:45 Monday.
All available city crews and personnel were dispatched to try to quickly contain water leaking from the ruptured line.
Workers had to close a shut-off valve to stem the flow of water.
"There is a lot of mud they're having to get through to assess the problem," said Delain George of the utility department.
Fixing the water line was expected to take about 7 to 8 hours.
No cause for the break was known late Monday.
All water users from the intersection of Main Avenue and Aztec Boulevard, northeast to the intersection of NE Aztec Boulevard and Navajo Dam Road were affected.
"People in those areas will either have no water or greatly diminished water pressure," George said. "We are working furiously to get this resolved."
No traffic delays or blocked streets were caused by the break.
