PV (9-10) led the Lady Braves (16-2) 21-20 at halftime, but SFIS outscored the Lady Panthers 22-11 in the third quarter en rout to a 57-45 win.
"We played a good first half, but the third quarter got us again," said PV head coach Mike Christie. "These good teams that are all highly ranked have all gotten us in the third quarter — Shiprock, Gallup and Santa Fe Indian."
PV went to the free-throw line just 11 times, a stat Christie hopes to see increase as the season progresses.
Kaleigh Graham scored a game-high 16 points while going toe-to-toe with the Lady Braves' star Bridgette Lee, who finished with 12 points.
"Graham battled all game long while in foul trouble," Christie said. "We knew Lee would score, but our key was having everyone stay home and let Graham man her up because Lee is such a good passer. Our girls started crashing in on her and then she hit a backside cutter for a layup. We need to learn to stick with our gameplan and not get caught in the moment."
PV has all of this week off to work out the kinks before District 1-4A games begin.
St. Pius X girls beat FHS by 40
Farmington never quit fighting Saturday, but in the end the Lady Scorps came away with a 40-point loss.
No. 5-ranked St. Pius X (8-6) took a 25-9 lead on Farmington (3-13) in the first quarter before eventually defeating the Lady Scorps 65-25.
Shayna Carlowe led Farmington with nine points in the loss.
"St. Pius is a great team, one of the top teams in 4A," said FHS head coach Mike Switch. "I am proud of our girls for never giving up and playing with heart so big you can't measure it until the final buzzer."
Farmington will play again Tuesday against Bloomfield, who beat the Lady Scorpions in close games twice in the last two weeks.
