KIRTLAND — The Kirtland Central team's struggles continued as it fell to Santa Fe Indian School.
The Lady Braves (15-2) hammered the Lady Broncos 51-19 Friday in Kirtland.
Kirtland (4-13) scored just one point in the first half.
"Can't win in basketball if you can't score," said Lady Broncos' head coach Kevin Holman. "We held a team that's probably top five in the entire state of New Mexico to 22 points, and we get one. Can't win games unless you can put the ball in the hoop."
Kirtland went 0-for-16 from the field and turned the ball over 16 times in the first half.
The Lady Broncos didn't hit their first field goal until the 6:30 mark of the third quarter.
SFIS had 10 different players score, led by Jenifer Willie with 10 points. Bridgette Lee, Shania Vallo and Lenaya Martinez added eight points apiece.
The Lady Braves are still trying to "iron out the kinks" but feel like they are starting to come along, SFIS head coach Cindy Roybal said.
"It's hard after the Christmas break because everybody goes home. The main (problem) is the turnovers," said Roybal after her team committed 23 in the win. "We need to learn to have a little bit of patience. We try to rush too much and force the issue when it's not there."
After stalling out the first half, the Lady Broncos offense found a little rhythm in second half, scoring 18 points, but still couldn't keep pace with the
No. 2-ranked team in 3A.
"We try to let them play and tell them to attack in the first half," Holman said. "Sometimes they just don't do it. We got a long way to go. In two weeks, we got the first district game, and the only way we even have a chance to repeat (as state champions) is to win district. All of these other games — Pius, Wingate — don't matter. We just have to use them as practices."
Only four Lady Broncos scored in the game, led by Taylor Billey's nine points that were all scored in the second half.
Friday’s win was the Lady Braves’ second win of the season over Kirtland. SFIS also won on Nov. 30, 59-17.
Kirtland will continue its season at home against Wingate next Friday. SFIS plays at Piedra Vista today at 2 p.m.
