Shortly after 11 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, Enrique Torres, 11, was killed when the Ford Explorer in which he and his family were traveling flipped on I-10 near mile marker 53 in Grant County. He was driving with his father Rosalio Torres, 49 and siblings, Yaret Torres, 13 and Christian Torres, 18. The family is from Santa Cruz, CA.
According to a report from the Luna County Sheriff's Office, Enrique was found 40 to 50 yards away from the wrecked vehicle. It did not indicate if he was ejected from the vehicle.
The report also said emergency medical responders with the Deming Fire Department were able to use the "jaws of life" tool to extract Christian from being trapped under the vehicle.
According to the report, the driver, Rosalio, said another vehicle cut him off in traffic, which caused him to lose control of his SUV. The other vehicle alleged to be the cause of the accident was not found.
The surviving family members were reportedly transported to Mimbres Memorial Hospital for treatment. The report did not say if they faced life-threatening injuries.
The New Mexico State Police, LCSO, Border Patrol and DFD responded to the accident.
