Derrick Yazzie, 36, was driving east on 30th Street from Piñon Hills Boulevard at 7 a.m. in a Honda Civic when he lost control of his vehicle and drove off the road, Beth Utley, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, said in a news release.
Yazzie's car flipped several times as it rolled down an embankment off the south side of the road.
His 17-year-old son was ejected from the vehicle.
Yazzie was not ejected. He was taken to San Juan Regional Medical to be treated for minor injuries.
The son remained in critical condition Wednesday afternoon, Utley said.
Deputies were still investigating the cause of the crash. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor, she said.
