FARMINGTON — Tres Rios Habitat for Humanity is wrapping up the holidays at its gift-wrapping booth across from the food court at Animas Valley Mall.

Volunteers, who wrap presents for two-hour shifts, are still needed to fill certain slots.

"Helping at the booth can give some people the opportunity to volunteer with Habitat that might not feel comfortable helping with building at the home site," said the organization's executive director, Jennifer Thiessen.

Thiessen says no wrapping experience is required. As with most Habitat volunteer opportunities, the organization will work with people of any skill level.

A group of Americorps workers from Denver, who are in San Juan County until Dec. 18, wrapped packages at the booth on Saturday. The group had worked at a Habitat home-building project earlier in the week.

"People are always looking to volunteer during the holidays, and working at the booth is a fun, festive thing to do," said Americorps worker Paige Trubatch.

The current Habitat building project is on Crouch Mesa and will be occupied by a family of six that has been living in a two-room mobile home. This is the eighth home constructed by Tres Rios Habitat.

"We also need volunteers and work groups from businesses and churches to help us get the home closed in before winter weather hits," Thiessen said. "We currently have state tax credits available to anyone who makes a donation of at least $300 or more, and their tax credit will be 50 percent of the donation."

Habitat hopes to build another home in the spring. The gift-wrapping booth is one of the fundraisers the organization holds to make sure it has the money necessary to continue new building.

The Habitat gift-wrapping booth is open from 12 to 8 p.m. every Friday and Saturday, and 12 to 6 p.m. Sunday until Christmas Eve. The booth will be open every day the week before Christmas.
