The defending 4A state champion Kirtland Central Lady Broncos basketball team opened the 2012-13 season with a loss Tuesday night.
Espanola Valley defeated Kirtland Central 64-36.
"It was a close first quarter but Espanola stretched it to 38-21 at half," said Lady Broncos head coach Kevin Holman. "We struggled offensively and went 7-21 from the free-throw line."
Holman is playing a short-handed team until the start of the second semester and had many girls playing their first varsity games Tuesday night.
Freshman Orquida Reyes led the Lady Broncos with 11 points.
Kirtland Central is off until the Santa Fe Indian School tournament begins on Nov. 29. The Lady Broncos will play Hot Springs in the first round.
