FARMINGTON — A man who was texting while driving caused an accident at the intersection of Apache Street and Butler Avenue on Friday afternoon, police said.

Eugene Gutierrez, a 35-year-old Farmington man, was traveling south on Butler when he ran a red light and collided his Ford minivan into a Ford truck driven by Suzanne Belt, a 63-year-old La Plata woman who had a 2-year-old passenger, said Farmington police Lt. Taft Tracy.

The crash was reported at 2:10 p.m. Friday.

All three people were transported to San Juan Regional Medical Center where they were treated for minor injuries, Tracy said.

Gutierrez admitted to police he was texting while driving. He was cited for failure to obey a traffic signal and texting while driving, Tracy said.
