The allegations were first reported in a news report on KOB Wednesday night: http://www.kob.com/article/stories/S2771489.shtml?cat=504
In December 2010, Begaye attended a conference hosted by the National Conference of State Legislators in Phoenix, Ariz.
Begaye billed both the state of New Mexico and the state legislators organization for his expenses, according to documents posted to KOB's website.
The Attorney General's office was notified of Begaye's possible misconduct last week by Legislative Council Services and started an investigation, said Phil Sisneros, a spokesman for New Mexico Attorney General Gary King.
“We are in the process of looking into it,” he said.
Legislative Council Services is a group of attorneys, researchers and bill writers who assist members of the New Mexico Legislature.
Begaye did not return calls to comment on the allegations Thursday.
Begaye has represented District 4 in the New Mexico Legislator since 1999. He is the chair of the Behavioral Health Subcommittee and a member of the Rules & Order of Business and Appropriations & Finance committees.
He is up for re-election this November against Sharon Clahchischilliage.
