One of the suspects, Vincent Montoya, was released from San Juan County Adult Detention Center less than two weeks prior to the attack. Montoya had been in custody facing tampering with evidence charges in the Anthony Jacquez's homicide case.
He was released on federal pretrial services, which is similar to probation before a trial, San Juan County Sheriff's Office Lt. Cory Tanner said.
Montoya, 29, Joshua Watts and Schanda Stansbury, both of Aztec, were arrested for the attack and charged with armed robbery, kidnapping and additional felonies, he said.
Jessica Evensen, a 32-year-old woman from Bayfield, Colo., was beaten in the hills behind SunRay Park and Casino on Aug. 11, police said. Her jewelry and her Southern Ute Tribal Identification Card were stolen, according to court documents.
She was found walking barefoot near County Road 5510 at 7 a.m. Aug. 12 with a broken jaw and bruises on her body after she spent a night in the hills hiding from her attackers, according to court documents.
An arrest warrant was issued for Jeremiah Harriott in the case, but he has not yet been located by police, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Brent Capshaw.
Tanner said the investigation is ongoing and additional suspects have been identified and may be charged in the case.
Kidnapping is a first-degree felony. If convicted,
Watts lured Evensen and a friend from the casino and drove them to an isolated, hilly area where Evensen was pulled from the vehicle and attacked by five or more suspects, according to court documents.
Police believe Stansbury and Montoya were waiting to attack Evensen when she arrived at the crime scene, according to court documents.
In addition to beating and robbing Evensen, one of the suspects also shot at Evensen and injected her with a syringe containing an unknown substance, according to court documents.
During the attack, Evensen told police the suspects were yelling about a crime committed against one of their associates in Ignacio, Colo. Evensen told police she didn't have anything to do with the crime the attackers referenced, Tanner said.
All the suspects who took place in the attack can be charged with Evensen's kidnapping, Capshaw said.
