FARMINGTON — Detectives suspect child abuse is the reason a 5-year-old girl from San Juan County remained in a coma Friday.
A girl who lives east of Bloomfield was taken to San Juan Regional Medical Center on Monday because she was having seizures, sheriff's office Lt. Cory Tanner said.
Hospital doctors notified police because the girl appeared to have been abused.
Tanner said the young girl suffered head trauma and had bruises all over her body.
Detectives also believe she was burned with cigarettes, Tanner said.
The girl was transferred by helicopter to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque where she was in critical condition in a coma Friday, Tanner said.
The girl's family, the suspects in the case, is speaking with detectives.
No arrests have been made.
