FARMINGTON — San Juan County Sheriff's detectives continue to investigate the identity of a male body discovered about a mile from an abandoned car belonging to a Farmington man who disappeared Jan. 24.

Irvin Rangel, 22, was last seen at Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort, sheriff's Detective Kevin Burns previously said.

Deputies were alerted to Rangel's disappearance after his black 2011 Lincoln Navigator was found about four miles south of Farmington, across the river from the Bisti Mustang gas station and near New Mexico 371.

The door was left open and deputies found blood inside the car.

On Saturday, a private search party located the body about a mile from where the car was discovered.

The identity of the man remains unknown and the body underwent autopsy Monday to determine the cause of death. Deputies also are hoping to determine the man's identity through the fingerprints.

Rangel moved to Farmington from Durango, Colo., this past summer.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sheriff's detectives at 505-334-6107 or San Juan County Crime Stoppers at 505-334-8477. Callers can remain anonymous and possibly receive a reward up to $2,000.
