FARMINGTON — Vern Dennison, the 48-year-old man found Oct. 7 submerged in the Animas River, died of accidental drowning, authorities said.

Alcohol was a contributing factor in his death, Farmington Police Detective Sgt. Robert Perez said.

Dennison, discovered by two pedestrians walking over the bridge on Murray Ave., was the second of six bodies to be found in the Four Corners region in the past two months.

Police believed Dennison's death was accidental based on the initial investigation, but they had to wait for toxicology results from the state lab before the Office of the Medical Examiner in Albuquerque would make a final determination.

Toxicology results can take four to six months, and pathologists often will not state cause of death until they have all the information, Chief Medical Investigator Mark Hawkinson previously said.

Cause of death remains pending for others while officials await results from toxicology lab work for Sherri Dollar, 49, Anthony Weston, 39, Nathaniel Morgan, 37, Jeremy Bee, 22, and an unidentified man discovered at the base of a 150-foot cliff 13 miles northeast of Shiprock on the Navajo Nation.

The FBI is leading the investigations of the two deaths on the Navajo Nation.

Authorities do not believe any of the deaths are connected, and except in the case of Morgan, none appear to be victims of foul play.
